This week for Cocktails with Calluna we caught up with Cindy Olig of The Perfect Petal.

  • Describe what you do?

Cindy: “Most of the time I concept and create wedding floral for our wedding department, and I curate lines of paper, jewelry, tabletop and fun homewares for our lifestyle boutique at The Perfect Petal. ”

  • What is your idea of a dream project?

Cindy: “I’d enjoy taking a pet object of desire, like an heirloom mother of Pearl cocktail clutch or a pair of treasured carved jade chopsticks and designing an entire 24 hour event around it. Preferably in San Miguel De Allende or Lisbon.”

  • What has been your favorite wedding that you have worked, or attended?

Cindy: “My favorite wedding that I ever attended was my cousin Kim’s. She was marrying a well known movie star. (think Men in Black and Lonesome Dove)They rented out the Driscoll Hotel in Austin and the party moved between 3 floors the entire night. I was starstruck, not by the guestlist, but by the lights and the magic. I was 14 and wore a beige and ivory suit. It was very 80’s.”

“My favorite wedding recently was for Dawn Abbot of Fun Productions. It did not have a colossal budget or intricate engineering of floral structures. What it did have was a room full of wedding industry friends, all of whom have known each other 15+ years, all geniuses, and all in love with the bride and groom. It as at Blanc. It was magic because we designed what our fantasy would be for the couple. Dawn gave us carte blanche. It was heaven.”

  • What does your morning routine look like?

Cindy : “I rise at 6:30 and watch Morning Joe with black coffee and cinnamon. Then I try out meditating for 15 minutes. I’m practicing happiness. I either head to the flower market to select stems for that day’s wedding trail, type up floral proposal in bed or head to the Perfect Petal to talk about retail lines with Romina.”

  • What are some of your favorite trends that you are seeing?

Cindy: “We are seeing alot of agate and geodes still in paper, pattern and homegoods. Our fall window will feature agate prints by Barloga. We are seeing the neutral tones of the last 4 years deepen with darker melons and watermelon. Everything has ferns. I think next year we will see more bright malachite green with super dark plum, ala Maggie Gyllenhaal’s house. ”

  • What advice would you give to a younger you?

Cindy : “The advice I would give myself is to be kinder, gentler with those around me, while still giving firm direction around our style. I think as a young entrepreneur, you dont have enough guidance on leadership as you would have in larger design houses.  I wish I had been more of a mentor to my employees in the early days… but I’m not giving up now!! ”

  • What makes you excited to go to work in the morning?

Cindy: “I like the people and smiles I work with every day. I love seeing the new lines come in, the new crops come in, meeting new clients for the first time. It’s all chain of such positive moments. ”

  • What is your favorite cocktail, or what are you drinking tonight?

Cindy: ” My favorite cocktail is a bee’s Knees (Gin+Lemon+Honey) shaken till frothy. buh bye”
